Some schemes offer funding to help farmers take action that protects water quality. One example is the Thames Water Catchment Fund, which is open to farms in Thames Water priority catchments.
About the Thames Water Catchment Fund
It’s open to farm businesses in Thames Water priority river and groundwater catchments.
Funding may cover up to 50% of the cost of equipment (ex. VAT), up to a maximum of £15,000 per farm business per funding cycle.
Applications close at the end of May and November each year. The next deadline is 30 November 2026.
Farmers are free to choose the equipment and brand that’s right for their farm. Thames Water does not endorse any particular manufacturer or product.
Is a subsoiler right for your farm?
Where soil compaction is causing runoff or poor drainage, subsoiling or a power harrow toolbar can help in the right situation, but it may not be the right solution for every farm. Thames Water’s project partners give free, one-to-one advice on what will work best on your farm, so speak to them before deciding on any equipment.
How to apply
Check whether your farm is in a priority catchment, using the maps in the Catchment Fund handbooks.
Contact Thames Water’s Catchment Projects team at [email protected]. They’ll put you in touch with your local project partner, who can talk through your ideas and help with the application.
Submit your application before the deadline. It will need to show how your plans will benefit water quality.
