How Ryetec Became a Leading Agricultural Machinery Manufacturer in the UK

The first episode of the Ryetec Roundup Podcast takes listeners back to the very beginning of Ryetec and how the company evolved into a respected agricultural machinery manufacturer in the UK.

Recorded during a relaxed Friday afternoon catch-up, the Ryetec team discuss the origins of the business, the early challenges of selling machinery, and the innovations that helped shape the company into what it is today.

From importing specialist equipment to developing original designs, the conversation reveals how Ryetec grew into a trusted supplier of agricultural equipment, groundcare machinery, and forestry machinery used across farms, estates, and contracting businesses throughout the UK.

Where the Ryetec Name Came From

Ryetec was founded in 1992 following a simple challenge.

A customer needed a machine capable of collecting leaves efficiently, but nothing suitable existed in the market at the time. This led to the creation of the company’s first machine, a leaf suction collector, which became the foundation for the business.

The name Ryetec originates from Ryedale in North Yorkshire, the region where the company began. The spelling reflects both the company’s roots and its focus on engineering.

  • Rye represents the agricultural heritage of the region
  • Tec highlights the machinery technology and engineering innovation behind the brand

Over time, the name Ryetec has become synonymous with reliable agricultural machinery and groundcare equipment.

Early Partnerships and Machinery Development

In the early years, Ryetec worked closely with European manufacturers to supply specialist equipment to the UK market.

One of the most important partnerships developed with Peruzzo, an Italian manufacturer of flail mower collectors and groundcare machinery.

However, machinery designed for southern Europe did not always perform perfectly in British conditions. UK grass is often heavier, wetter, and more demanding.

This meant Ryetec frequently needed to modify machines to improve performance.

Rather than simply importing equipment, the company began:

  • Adapting designs
  • Refining machinery performance
  • Developing solutions for real customer problems

This practical approach helped establish Ryetec as a trusted supplier of professional groundcare machinery and flail mower collectors across the UK.

A Focus on Premium Agricultural Machinery

From the beginning, Ryetec focused on supplying high-quality machinery rather than competing on price alone.

The philosophy was straightforward. If the equipment performs well and lasts longer, it becomes easier to sell and support.

This approach helped Ryetec build a reputation for supplying premium machinery across several sectors, including:

  • Agriculture
  • Forestry
  • Groundcare
  • Estate management

Today, Ryetec supplies a wide range of equipment including:

  • Flail mower collectors
  • Hedge cutters
  • Log splitters
  • Timber trailers
  • Cultivation machinery
  • Specialist groundcare equipment

These machines are widely used by farmers, contractors, councils, and estates throughout the UK.

Expanding Into Forestry Machinery

One of Ryetec’s most successful product expansions came through the introduction of forestry and firewood equipment.

Log splitters were first introduced almost by accident after the team sourced one for internal use.

When the machine was taken to an agricultural show demonstration, demand quickly became clear. Several machines were sold directly from the stand, highlighting strong interest in reliable forestry machinery and firewood processing equipment.

Today Ryetec continues to supply equipment designed for professional forestry applications and rural estates.

Moving Into Agricultural Machinery Manufacturing

A major turning point came when Ryetec acquired the Quickcut wholecrop header business.

This marked the company’s transition from importing machinery to becoming a British agricultural machinery manufacturer.

The project required significant redevelopment. The original design relied on components that were no longer available, which forced the team to redesign major parts of the machine.

Although the process was challenging, it provided valuable experience in:

  • Agricultural machinery design
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Product development

This move laid the foundation for Ryetec’s future manufacturing capabilities.

The Development of the Ryetec Restorer

One of Ryetec’s most successful agricultural innovations is the Ryetec Restorer.

The Restorer is a specialist subsoiler designed to improve soil structure and reduce compaction, helping farmers improve field performance and crop yields.

The machine supports modern farming practices by:

  • Relieving soil compaction
  • Improving drainage
  • Encouraging root development
  • Supporting regenerative agriculture methods

The Restorer range is now widely recognised within the industry and forms a key part of Ryetec’s growing range of agricultural cultivation machinery.

Learning Through Hands-On Experience

A key part of Ryetec’s story is the development of its team.

Many staff members started in hands-on roles and worked their way through the business.

For example, Sales Manager Max joined the company as an apprentice at just 16 years old.

Early responsibilities included:

  • Preparing machines for delivery
  • Refurbishing equipment
  • Assisting with product demonstrations
  • Supporting trade shows

This practical experience helped build deep knowledge of agricultural machinery and customer needs, which continues to support Ryetec’s approach today.

From Trade Shows to Digital Media

In the early years, trade shows played a vital role in promoting Ryetec machinery. Agricultural exhibitions allowed the team to demonstrate machines directly to farmers and contractors.

While these events remain important, the industry has evolved significantly.

Today Ryetec connects with customers through:

  • Online machinery videos
  • YouTube demonstrations
  • Social media content
  • Industry podcasts such as the Ryetec Roundup

This shift reflects the wider changes happening across the agricultural machinery industry in the UK.

What’s Next for Ryetec

More than 30 years after its founding, Ryetec continues to grow as a British agricultural machinery manufacturer.

The company now designs, manufactures, and supplies machinery used across:

  • Agriculture
  • Forestry
  • Groundcare
  • Estate management

The Ryetec Roundup Podcast will continue exploring the industry, sharing insights into machinery development, agricultural innovation, and the future of the sector.

Future episodes will also cover international events such as Agritechnica, where Ryetec is expanding its global presence.
